P 11-257 Mystic Seaport - Hewitt

In a story I posted; “Stonington / North Stonington,
Connecticut – Hewitt” I noted there were a lot of Hewitt descendants in the
area. The North Stonington ‘Hewitt
Farm Trails’ was donated to Mystic Seaport by a Hewitt and made me think to
check out Mystic Seaport for connections.
This morning I visited www.mysticseaport.org
– Collections – and searched “Hewitt”.
There were about 70 ‘hits’. Most
likely these are distant cousins. You
may also want to search the different variations of the spelling of the
surname, Hewit, Huet, Hewett, all appear in other research. I wouldn’t be surprised if the New London Maritime Society http://www.nlmaritimesociety.org/
and the Old Saybrook
Historical Society http://www.saybrookhistory.org/
had additional histories.
Especially interesting was the New York fireboat and tugboat
fleet, New York City, with 2 ships named ABRAM S HEWITT (1903), and HEWITT
(1964). Although newer than the tugboats
Thomas Mahoney captained, they may have shared the same docks.
The New London Crew List Index: 1803-1878 lists 18 Hewitt’s.
