In 1656 a man calling himself Thomas Hewitt arrived as
captain aboard a trading ship in the Mystic River in Stonington, CT. (now the
city of Mystic). There he settled and
married Hannah Palmer in 1659. He
continued his sea trade while fathering 2 sons before he left on a voyage in
1662 to the West Indies from which he never returned.
His 2 children have 286 descendants in the Stonington
records in additions to the Hewitt’s that relocated to Delaware County,
NY. More settled in North Stonington and
throughout Connecticut. His widowed wife
had 2 more children by her second husband, Roger Sterry. They also leave many descendants in the area.
Ella Hewitt-Green (1876-1941) married Joseph Green
(1868-1942) and became the parents of Claude Hewitt Green.
North Stonington has 4 cemeteries still named after the
Hewitt’s. Additionally, the Wheeler
cemetery was originally named a Hewitt Cemetery. Hewitt graves are scattered throughout the
region’s other cemeteries. North
Stonington also has a 106 acre park named ‘Hewitt Farm Trails’.

In
my opinion, there is a lot more the Captain Hewitt story which will
follow.
